College Scholarships South Africa-France Science and Technology Research Program
Joint Protea Call for Project Proposals
Study Subject: Nanoscience/Nanotechnology, Life sciences, Biotechnology Energy, Humanities or Social sciences.
Employer:National Research Foundation, South Africa and Ministry of foriegn and European Affairs.
Scholarships Level: PhD, Postdoctoral
Scholarships Description: Protea has been created to develop the relationship between the French and South African scientific
communities through joint research. The purpose of the co-operative programme is to encourage an exchange between researchers and to develop a synergy between the two scientific communities, thereby developing a durable network. The co-operative research projects funded under this agreement are developed and submitted in both countries by French and South African researchers, working as partner teams and headed by two team leaders, one French and one South African, who bear the main responsibility for the project, including its
technical and administrative coordination as well as scientific and financial reporting. In South Africa this call is open to Msc-holding (preferable PhD) researchers residing in the country and affiliated with a recognised higher education or research institution such as a university, university of technology or science council. No applications will be accepted from private companies.
Each co-operative research project will run for a maximum duration of two years. Each project will aim to fulfil well-defined contractual objectives and will have to dispose of the necessary means to ensure that these objectives are effectively achieved.
Particular emphasis is to be placed on the training of students and young researchers achieved through research and the transfer of knowledge and know-how aimed at socio-economic community development.Industrial and institutional partners involved in the projects or in the communication of its results should be officially mentioned and recognised. The integration of young researchers and students, and the exchange of post-doctoral researchers are encouraged, as is the involvement of students and researchers from previously-disadvantaged communities.
Each project financed will undergo a final evaluation in order to examine its outputs and compare the
results achieved with the objectives set out at the beginning of the project. Note that both scientific and financial reporting on the project is an obligatory condition for continued funding.
The onus is on the applicant to find their own research partner. Proposals must be received in both France and South Africa. Proposals which have only been received in either South Africa or France, but not both, will not be considered for funding. The NRF call process is highly competitive therefore application submission does not guarantee funding. The availability of funds and the evaluation of applications from both countries should be positive for them to be funded. The NRF will not be held responsible for non-submission of the application in the partner country.
Which research areas may one apply for?
During the present call, priority will be given to the joint research projects in the following areas:
• Nanoscience/Nanotechnology
• Life sciences
• Biotechnology
• Energy
• Humanities/Social sciences

PhD Scholarships in Uppsala University, Sweden
PhD Student in Limnology, Molecular Microbial Ecology Limnology, Uppsala University, Sweden
PhD student in Limnology, Molecular Microbial Ecology Limnology, Department of Ecology and Genetics, Uppsala University, Sweden, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Microbiology (UFZ, Leipzig, Germany).
Groundwater is one of our most important drinking water resource, yet it is threatened by pollution and overexploitation. Groundwater also sustains and interlinks a great number of biologically diverse ecosystems, such as soils, rivers, and wetlands. Such transition zones are areas of high microbial activity and diversity and occur between saturated and vadose parts in soils, at the boundary of aquatic sediments and the water column, or in tidal regions. At the zonal interface, substantial physical variations (flow velocities, hydraulic gradients) and chemical gradients (e.g., oxygen, pH, temperature, organic carbon, and contaminants) coexist and thus create unique ecological niches for diverse microbial activity. The main task of the PhD student will be to characterize (A) small-scale gradients in hydrocarbon contaminated aquifers using microsensor equipment, characterize (B) the ecology, physiology, and the (meta)genome of hydrocarbon degraders in situ, and (C) the role and distribution of extracellular electron transport via type IV pili in aquifer sediments. The aim is to provide insight into the processes governing intrinsic bioremediation.
The position is at Uppsala University, but the work will be located both in Uppsala (Sweden) and Leipzig (Germany).
We seek a highly motivated creative person with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and the willingness to live and work at both locations (Uppsala and Leipzig) during their PhD studies. Candidates should have a master (Diploma or equivalent) in Biology and should have a very good knowledge of English. A background in microsensor application is desirable. The application should include a short letter which describes yourself and your research interests, a CV, copies of your exams, degrees and grades, and – if relevant – a copy of your Masters thesis, diploma projects or equivalent. Names and contact information for one or two reference persons shall be included. Other relevant material can also be included.
Funding for a PhD position normally extends over a period of four (full-time equivalent) years. Additionally, optional teaching assistance duties up to a level of 20% of full time may be pursued, depending on availability. More information can be obtained on the following web page: http://www.teknat.uu.se . Further regulations concerning for PhD-students are as laid down in Högskoleförordningen 5 kap, 1-7 §§. Uppsala University is striving to achieve gender equality and therefore we explicitly encourage women to apply for this position.

The application should be sent, preferably by e-mail to: registrator@uu.se, or by fax +46-18471 2000, or by mail to: Registrar´s Office, Uppsala University, Box 256, SE-751 05 UPPSALA, Sweden. In any correspondence please use the reference number UFV-PA 2010/2094.

International Scholarships PhD program in Duke NUS
PhD program in Duke NUS, Graduate Medical School Singapore
Duke-NUS will launch its inaugural PhD program in Integrated Biology and Medicine in August of 2010. The program distinguishes itself from others in Singapore and abroad by emphasizing training in translational science, preparing students to take their research findings from “bench to bedside.” Students will complete their advanced training in one of the following specialty areas:
Cancer and Stem Cell Biology
Emerging Infectious Diseases
Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases
Neuroscience and Behavioral Disorders
Health Services Research
The degree, which will take on average 4 to 5 years to complete, culminates with the development of a written thesis and a successful oral dissertation defense.
Curriculum
Like the MD training program, the Ph.D. core course emphasizes novel teaching strategies which rapidly transition undergraduates to a mode of learning better suited for graduate education and for a lifelong career in biomedical research. During the first week in the program, students are introduced to scientific literature searches and evaluation and critique of seminal scientific papers. The program will utilize Team Learning approaches that reinforce critical thinking and public debate. Read more about the curriculum structure here.
Thesis Mentors
The IBM degree is a research-intensive program which culminates with the defense of a dissertation and the publication of the student’s findings. Research is done under the direction of an approved faculty mentor, who serves as chair of the student’s dissertation committee and provides financial support for research activities.
Funding
All accepted students will be provided with a stipend and full cost of tuition and fees. Some will be funded through an A*STAR Fellowship which has specific requirements and terms. A limited number of other 4-year fellowships are available that do not carry Singapore citizenship nor service commitment requirements.
How to Apply
Applicants should have completed a Bachelor’s degree in some discipline of science and obtained a minimum (aggregate V+Q) score of 1300 on the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). Exceptions to this rule, such as degrees in other disciplines or a GRE score below 1300, will be considered when the applicant has shown clear evidence of prior laboratory research experience and the strong commitment to research training and career in biomedical sciences. Applicants from non-English speaking countries will be required to present documented evidence of their competence in written and spoken English (e.g. TOEFL scores). Applications are closed for 2010, but will re-open in July for our August 2011 intake.
